During my weekly meeting with my ELL student, we had a discussion about names, which led to a discussion of Chinese characters. I find this sort of thing fascinating, and I was really glad she was willing to indulge me.

Apparently paisley originally came from Iran/Persia in the 18th/19th century. It was later popularized in the west. The name comes from the town of Paisley, Scotland, where the design was popularized, especially for bandanas. The word “bandana” actually comes from Hindu.
