We went to the Desert Botanical Garden today. It’s a very cool place anyway; as an informal educator, I really appreciate the thought they’ve put into their designs. But today they were celebrating El Dia de Los Muertos. There were artists and musicians and food, as well as special activities for the kids.

I went with Leah to her horseback riding lesson today. The first part of every lesson is grooming the horse. Leah is quite little and horses are quite big, but they seem quite comfortable around one another.

When my brother told me that he got a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix, I was pretty concerned. Not a quiet mellow dog, this, and there are already three cats and an 8 year old in the house. But I was pleasantly surprised; Trixie is well behaved and very very sweet.

Flew out to Arizona today with a brief stop at Midway in Chicago.

At the tender age of 9 months, Calvin seems to be off to a good start in his selection of beers. His parents are so proud.

Rachel and Fred came over for a brief visit with Marc and Michaela this evening. Rachel is completely enamored of Parker, and spent some time playing with him. Parker demonstrated his usual grace and panache.

One of the things I did during that first week after we moved was to get a new library card. I’m finding my way in my new library, although the fiction section goes around a few weird corners and is hard to follow. I’m also getting used to the fact that they don’t separate out their genre fiction, and all paperbacks are kept separate. Not big issues, just took a little time.

Like every other New Englander with a camera, I took a picture of the leaves. They are gorgeous. Even though they mean winter is coming, which displeases me.

I walked through the back room of the museum shop today and saw these.

I think they are creepy.

I’ve seen this little symbol painted on the street near work, and today I also spotted a three-dimensional version on the side of a traffic light. My coworkers tell me it’s all over the place. I have no idea what it is or what it means.
