Final layout

As I posted yesterday, we’ve ordered our kitchen cabinets.  So that means the layout is finalized now.  Here is the plan view:

and here are the elevations:

This is not a huge divergence from the “GardenWeb” plan, but let me take you through it once more. Where we keep stuff is, of course, subject to change once we’re living with the space, but having a plan makes me feel better that we haven’t forgotten anything.  Starting at the lower right of the plan view and left hand side of the topmost elevation (stove wall):

  • Pantry cabinet with roll-out shelves. This is for commonly used foods & small appliances.
  • Upper: bowls, ramekins, etc. used in cooking
  • Lower: Roll-out tray storage; also for cutting boards
  • Lower: prep sink, with a small trash can underneath
  • Lower: Two 30″ wide drawer stacks for pots & pans and cooking / prep utensils. Above these is my primary prep space, over 5 feet of continuous counter that overlooks the back yard through the window.
  • Stove & range hood
  • Upper, flanking the stove: herbs & spices, oils, etc.
  • Lower, to the right of stove: drawer for kitchen linens, baking dishes (on roll-outs) underneath

Sink wall, starting at the lower left (plan), left side (elevation):

  • Step-in pantry. This closet-like area will house less frequently used small appliances, bulk amounts of food & supplies, and large items. Also onion & potato storage, since this space will not be heated. Depending on how much it fills up, we may pull some of our party supplies (serving items, plasticware) from the basement to here as well.
  • Upper: Tupperware, glass jars, and other storage
  • Lower (drawers): Wraps & bags, maybe more tupperware, probably the junk drawer
  • Lower: trash & recycle pull-out
  • Lower: main sink, with cleaning supplies underneath
  • Dishwasher
  • Upper: Main glass & plate & bowl storage
  • Lower: Silverware; deep roll-outs underneath for pet food, etc.
  • Finally, on the end we have what looks like another pantry cabinet, but this is only 12″ deep due to a plumbing chase behind it. On top we have storage for large plates & bowls etc., and below is a charging station.  In between is a cabinet with mail sorting cubbies. The phone lives on the counter just to the left of here.

Finally, the fridge wall.  Once again, starting from the left:

  • Open peninsula, with turned legs on the open end. This is a space for guests to hang out in the kitchen, as well as a place for the cook to sit and do detail tasks such as shelling peas or making dumplings. We plan to have 2 or 3 backless stools under this counter, depending on what fits.
  • Upper: Nook for a microwave, with a deep cabinet above it
  • Lower: full-height door cabinet (not what’s drawn in the elevation) for storage of large items
  • Refrigerator, with deep cabinets above it.  These and the cabinet above the microwave will be good for large serving items.

The planning for our new sunroom is much less far along.  What I’ve drawn here is the proposed size, but Lis and I need to secure a special permit from the city before proceeding since the existing house is non-conforming to current zoning.
