{"id":21,"date":"2010-12-28T09:36:20","date_gmt":"2010-12-28T09:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.parkercat.org\/costarica\/2010\/12\/28\/december_26\/"},"modified":"2014-11-16T22:50:57","modified_gmt":"2014-11-16T22:50:57","slug":"december_26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.parkercat.org\/costarica\/2010\/12\/28\/december_26\/","title":{"rendered":"December 26"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the day after Christmas, Lis and I went with one other person from our group and our guide for a whale watch with snorkeling in the middle.&nbsp; For some reason, whale watches out of Boston never include this middle part.<\/p>\n<p>We were looking for the humpback whales.&nbsp; This area gets both northern and southern humpbacks, and I&#8217;m not sure which these were.&nbsp; They&#8217;re the same species but not the same population we see in New England (though the joke is that whales do get a discount goingthrough the Panama canal).&nbsp; The whales come here to give birth in the warm waters, but soon migrate back as there&#8217;s no food for them here.<\/p>\n<p>We had quite a successful whale watch, seeing first a pod of 2 adults and a baby, and later a very active pod of 5 or 6 whales.&nbsp; We also saw dolphins &#8212; which were too quick for me to catch in a photo &#8212; and a lot of birds.&nbsp; And two sea turtles, a first for me.<\/p>\n<p>Snorkeling was near Isla del Ca\u00f1o, 15 or so miles off the coast.&nbsp; The snorkeling here was much nicer than the previous day&#8217;s, since the coral is much more abundant: silt runoff from storms &#8212; and particularly associated with the relatively recent construction of a new road along the coast &#8212; has<br \/>\ngreatly affected the coral along the coast.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s post has 2 pictures &#8212; the first a somewhat blurry shot of a Ridley&#8217;s turtle, and the second a member of the second pod of whales<br \/><br \/\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parkercat.org\/doug_project_365\/assets_c\/2010\/12\/DCL_7601_sm-3432.html\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.parkercat.org\/doug_project_365\/assets_c\/2010\/12\/DCL_7601_sm-thumb-700x465-3432.jpg\" alt=\"DCL_7601_sm.JPG\" class=\"mt-image-none\" height=\"465\" width=\"700\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parkercat.org\/doug_project_365\/assets_c\/2010\/12\/DCL_7751_sm-3435.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.parkercat.org\/doug_project_365\/assets_c\/2010\/12\/DCL_7751_sm-thumb-700x465-3435.jpg\" alt=\"DCL_7751_sm.JPG\" class=\"mt-image-none\" height=\"465\" width=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the day after Christmas, Lis and I went with one other person from our group and our guide for a whale watch with snorkeling in the middle.&nbsp; For some reason, whale watches out of Boston never include this middle part.
