Doug's Project 365

Lis got me a GrowlTap for my birthday.  It turns a beer growler into a mini-keg for your fridge — you can keep a growler fresh for much longer than otherwise, and the beer tastes much more like beer from a tap.

I’m migrating my father in law from his old Linux system to an old MacBook from my brother in law. This should reduce my support load.  He has no idea what OS he’s running but can get better support from others if it’s Mac.

And yes, that’s a glass of armagnac. I’m not willing to waste the evening entirely.

I am making what is probably my last lime-based cocktail of the season: a French gimlet.

I had a work event this evening, and (long story short) missed my target commuter rail train by 3 minutes. A beer at Tavern on the Square was my consolation prize while I waited for the next one.

We went canoeing this morning, and saw a cooperative great blue heron.

The Ikea bookcases in the loft have one significant flaw when used to actually hold books: they have a fairly wide faceframe that hides the first book. I cut up some scrap maple to make fake books to occupy this space instead.

Modern LCD screens are more complex at the pixel level than you would expect. This is the pixel structure of our new TV. Each vertical colored stripe is about 0.25 mm wide, and is broken up into quite a few sub-pixels.

My personal unofficial first day of autumn: I wear a jacket to work.

Who would guess that this photo was taken atop a major interstate highway? The Big Dig may have been a ridiculously expensive project, but it did great things for the Boston waterfront.

My bike pump broke while we were on the Vineyard this year. I was able to repair the damage, but it’s not working as well as it was. Given that this pump is about 15 years old I decided it would be best to just replace it. I’m happy to report the manufacturer still makes a very similar model.
