Here is the marble console sink top for our once-and-future green  bathroom.

I never thought I would be this excited to see concrete backer board. And a tub.

We think our bathroom was last renovated in the early 1980s, so when Tony needed to tell Fran he’d gone out to get lumber, he couldn’t just text her, had to leave a note — a note preserved as a mini time capsule until the current renovation.

We have referred to the main bathroom on our 2nd floor as the “green bathroom” because it was so green when we moved in it was etched upon our minds. It has been yellow for almost 15 years now, but we’re leaning back in to green with this renovation.

For our own primary suite bathroom we’re aiming for a calm, spa-like feel.

Our contractor intended to do a quick swap of the old tub for the new one today. But the previous re-muddle left such a mess he’s going to have to rebuild more before putting it back together. The worst is that what remains of this floor joist would be what’s supporting a tub full of water.

Why would a gas stove’s flame be yellow (tending toward orange in this photo)? It could be an improper air-fuel mixture. It could be something spooky or evil. Or, it could be the emission spectrum of sodium from someone using a saline nebulizer next to the stove.

From the wear pattern on the wood floor that was under the tiles in our old bathroom, it’s clear this was the finished floor at one time. Just fir boards with varnish.

We’re staying at a friends’ empty house — with our kitties — this week while the worst of the demolition for our bathrooms gets done. This is the longest they’ve been out of the house they know since we brought them home in 2012. Last night they were freaked out and hiding, but this morning Gandalf is stuck to me like glue while Ferrous is still not quite sure, but at least out and exploring.

So long, dated primary-suite bathroom with a tiny, tiny shower. We look forward to meeting your posh new replacement in about 2 months.

Proper technique for seared duck breast is counterintuitive: low and slow, skin side down. So long as you’ve scored the skin, the fat will have time to render and become crispy without overcooking the meat.
