I cleaned out my briefcase today. For some reason I’ve been saving my expired T passes. It’s gonna feel so much lighter now!
(Yes, the MBTA sends out new RFID-bearing cards every month. Yes, it’s dumb. It’s because the conductors on the commuter rail don’t have RFID readers and so need to see the printed pass.)

For some reason there was a drone flying above the train station this morning, clearly filming the trains.

I keep my cookbooks on a bookshelf that’s relatively new to us, but has been in my family for a long time. This weekend I spruced it up with a fresh coat of paint and a new top, base, and trim that match our kitchen cabinets. The base and trim are leftover pieces from our kitchen project, but I made the top from some cherry planks and stained it to match. (I think our kitchen contractor nearly kissed me when I said, “I ordered matching stain from the cabinet company.”)

Here you see my “off-site backup” solution for our important files, photos, etc. from our home computers: a hard disk in my desk drawer at work. I had gotten pretty lax about updating it, but the disaster in the Carolinas prompted me to step it up. I’ll swap it out for its twin at home every couple of months, or more frequently if we’ve generated important stuff.

Jon brought his pups to a late-season BBQ at Kat & Bob’s. They wound up in various people’s laps for much of the evening to keep them warm and keep them wandering off. And because — duh — adorable.

For my birthday this year, Lis got me a Moka Pot, a device whose invention contributed to the prevalence of a coffee-drinking culture in Italy. Also sometimes known as a “stovetop espresso maker,” this little device produces strong coffee that’s bright and rich, though not to the same extent as true espresso.

I made pizza on the grill this evening for dinner. Somehow the dough for mine (on the right) was not very strong, and wound up with a hole that looked like a handle.

We had Lis’s old boss over for a Fudge-Off: she vacations on Block Island and brought fudge from Blocks of Fudge; we of course provided fudge from Murdick’s on the Vineyard. This is penuche and plain chocolate from each.
The verdict: the smoothness and chocolate flavor from Blocks of Fudge works better, but the granular texture and butter flavor of Murdick’s penuche is superior and won the day.
