Lunch on the Greenway

I got lunch from a taco truck today and ate it outside, on the Greenway, in today’s unseasonably warm weather. I was not the only one with this idea, but surprisingly the only one from my office.

Powder dump

Michael, Chris, and I decided to drive from Stowe to Jay Peak today for what turned out to be an epic day of skiing. With 18″ of fresh snow to play in — more where it got blown into the trees by the ample wind — today was the deepest powder I have ever skied on either coast. We got nearly first tracks in Hell’s Woods, then proceeded to lap the rest of the glades we could access from the one running chair until we were ready to (and did!) fall over.

Superb Owl

There was some sort of televised sporting contest this evening that meant (a) the friends I was skiing with congregated to observe (leaving me on my own for dinner), and (b) the streets of picturesque downtown Stowe VT were deserted — including, alas, all three restaurants I had been considering eating at. I wound up at my hotel’s restaurant where I had a good (if television-noise-encroached) dinner at the bar.

Après ski menu

Bars at ski areas do a good business near the end of the day. My favorite type is fast disappearing: old-style New England ski lodge, worn wooden surfaces, plentiful local beer. But we had my second favorite today: not too crowded, with good not-too-loud music, and that all-important local beer.

Yes I made it again

I made cornbread with goose fat last night to go with my chili, while Lis was away. Now that she’s back I made it again, this time with duck fat.
